Editor’s note: Ed Pratt, a columnist for The Advocate and assistant to the chancellor for media relations at Southern University, is on a journey to lose 40 pounds this year. Let’s see how his first month went.

The first month of reshaping my eating habits has been successful. I have lost 10 pounds since Jan. 1, and there is little doubt the loss is a by-product of better eating habits and exercising.

I am still having problems sometimes with late-night eating. Also, finding time for enough exercise is difficult.

I have to do a better job of eating balanced meals, too. While I have cut caloric and carb intake, I rarely eat fruit, which is interesting because fruit was once a major part of my diet.

The public support I have received on my Prattwontbefatt Facebook page has been very inspirational and keeps me focused.

Here’s hoping February is a good month for me.
