Sportsplex now open

The new 30,000-square-foot Team Automotive Group Sportsplex is now open. The facility is located at BREC’s Perkins Road Community Park, 7122 Perkins Road, and is the result of a partnership among Team Automotive Group, the Baton Rouge Basketball and Volleyball Association and BREC.

The Sportsplex is the largest indoor basketball facility in Baton Rouge and the largest indoor volleyball facility in the state. In addition to being a premier basketball and volleyball complex, it is used for other purposes including BREC summer camps, cheerleading competitions and recreation activities for seniors.

The facility houses three tournament play basketball courts, six youth basketball courts, twelve basketball half courts and five competition volleyball courts.

Shenandoah gets

Healthy Kids grant

Shenandoah Elementary School is one of 500 schools across the United States to receive a School Grants for Healthy Kids Award. The program, sponsored by Action for Healthy Kids and its partners, is designed to support strong nutrition programs around school breakfast.

Shenandoah’s physical education teachers Courtney Comeaux and Eric Gwinn were awarded $2,000 for their school-wide project called “Taste for Success.” The teachers plan to use the award to purchase materials and supplies for such activities as nutrition lessons, taste tests of different healthy foods, a family nutrition and fitness night, an online blog and monthly newsletter updates.
